London: The international athletics body said on Wednesday it banned nine track and field athletes on doping charges.
The banned athletes include leading marathon runner Abderrahim Goumri. The move came after a crackdown on the use of prohibited substances by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) with the help of Athlete Biological Passport programme.
“Today’s announcements underline the IAAF’s continued and unwavering campaign against doping in athletics,” IAAF President Lamine Diack said in a statement, Reuters reported.
“They demonstrate the IAAF’s commitment to use advanced methods to detect doping and to enforce increased sanctions when justified. We will not stint in our resolve to do everything in our power to eradicate cheating.”
The nine banned athletes are: Inna Eftimova (Bulgaria), Nataliya Tobias (Ukraine), Antonina Yefremova (Ukraine), Abderrahim Goumri (Morocco), Svetlana Klyuka (Russia), Yevgenina Zinurova (Rusia), Nailiya Yulamanova (Russia), Irini Kokkinariou (Greece) and Meryem Erdogan (Turkey).
The IAAF’s announcement came after the Moroccan favourite for the women’s 1,500 metres, Mariem Alaoui Selsouli, was confirmed to have tested positive for a banned diuretic.
WADA said on Tuesday that more than 100 athletes were caught doping and sanctioned in the months leading up to the London Olympics.
