Searching about the Apple Incorporation on internet, I found that one of the biggest works of Apple was their manufacture of operating system, known as iOS. The iOS is even a bigger achievement than the iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple TV. All these popular devices used iOS in them.
What is iOS?
iOS is basically an operating system. It was made for the first time in 2007, to use in it in iPhone 1. But the operating system was not given such specific name and it was said that the iPhone uses OS X in it. The newer version of it was released in March 2008 and was given the name of iPhone OS. In June 2010, Apple rebranded the iPhone OS as “iOS”. It took the rights from Cisco which have be using the name for decades.
iOS 4.O and Updated Versions
Apple released iOS 4 on June 21, 2010, three days before the iPhone 4’s launch. The upgraded version; iOS 4.0.1released on 15th July, 2010, included a fix to the reception signal strength indicator. Apple also released iOS 3.2.1 for the iPad which tweaked the tablet’s Wi-Fi connectivity, video playback, and copy-and-paste for PDF attachments.
iOS 4.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch was released on September 8, 2010; the update fixed some bugs reported by users, improved battery life and added several new features such as Game Center (play games online), toggle spell checking, HDR photography (iPhone 4 and 4s only) and Ping (a social music network).
iOS 4.2.1 was released on November 22, 2010. It added iPad compatibility. Further on iOS 4.2.5 was released as a demo version for the CDMA version of the iPhone 4. iOS 4.3 was released to the public on March 9, 2011, two days before the iPad 2 was available in the United States.
In addition to earlier features, new update included many new features such as a Nitro JavaScript engine in Safari, making Safari run up to twice as fast according to Apple. iTunes Home Sharing also received a major revision in iOS 4.3; it allows users to connect to their home Wi-Fi networks and stream content from iOS devices to speakers, TVs and other devices, or vice versa. Personal Hotspot for iPhone 4 was a new feature to GSM iPhone that allows the user to create a Wi-Fi network with an iPhone 4.
iOS 5.0 and Updated Version
iOS 5.0 and its features was released on October 12, 2011. iOS 5 introduced the iCloud service and the Notification Center.
The operating system also features new applications, such as the special home screen folder and App Store category that contains newspaper and magazine apps. The iPod application on the iPhone and iPad has now been split into the Music and Video application, just as it had been on the iPod touch. On the iPhone 4S, a virtual assistant named Siri was added, which allows users to talk to their iPhone 4S and perform various tasks, send messages, create alerts, and do internet searches. Almost all system apps were updated with new features or a redesigned interface. It also added updated security and bug fixes.
iOS 5.0.1 was released in November 2011. This update included a number of various bug fixes and a security update. The update also fixes battery problems with new devices and errors with the iCloud service. iOS 5.1 was announced alongside the iPad and Apple TV (3rd generations) on 7th March 2012. iOS 5.1.1 was released in the spring of 2012.this update also fix bugs and security.
iOS 6.0
iOS 6 was announced on June 11, 2012. Announced features include a Siri update, Facebook integration, a new maps app with turn by turn directions, FaceTime over cellular, and a new Passbook app that allows users to collect store gift cards and tickets. The Apple website claims that iOS 6 will take us to entirely new directions relating iPhones, iPads, and iPods.
Apple at odd with Google (& Others)
A analyst writes about the threats to Apple’s iOS cause competitors like Google and Microsoft,” First Apple released iOS 6 at WWDC, then Microsoft announced the most awaited Windows Phone 8, and recently at the Google I/O event, the newest Android iteration Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) was launched adding a new competitor to the two-horse mobile race.
The new OS iterations were sheer improvements for Apple and Google to stay in the competition. On the other hand, Microsoft is here to prove its mettle and regain the ground that it has been losing on the mobile platform. It has tried hard and the feature set of the Windows Phone 8 will vouch for it.”
This means that Microsoft is ready to take the ground. The Apple’s administration is aware of the fact and they should add some new features in the iOS 6 so the Apple‘s user do not shift themselves to Android or Windows 8!!!
