Paris: Ten years ago, then French President Jacques Chirac survived an assassination attempt. He was shot by twenty five years old Neo Nazi named Maxime Brunerie during a Bastille Day parade.
The early speculation back then suggested that Brunerie wanted to kill Jacques Chirac due to his victory in the Presidential elections against National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen. But Mr. Le Pen denied any connection with Brunerie.
Brunerie pulled a gun from his guitar case when President’s jeep passed the Champs Elysee close to the Arc de Triomphe. Bystanders caught him though he was able to fire one shot.
Brunerie was quite far away from the president when he fired. And the gun used in the attack served the purpose of hunting animals. And even Chirac did not know about the attack until he was told about it. Burnerie was arrested by the police on the spot.
The investigations revealed that he was not a normal person and his motive was to assassinate Chirac and then to kill himself. However, the attack was taken very lightly by everyone. The response of government and media was subdued on this incident.
Police official had a record of Brunerie due to his associations with extreme right groups since he was 18. He has been linked with various neo-facist parties and groups like the French and Eurpeon Nationalist Party, Union Defense Party and Radical Unity.
These organizations had a reputation of unifying extreme right youth and student groups. And all the organizations that Brunerie joined had one thing in common; they all were anti immigrant and anti Semitic and open defenders of Hitler and the Nazis.
As per French press Brunerie was a business student in Management and Accounting and he worked as a driver occasionally.
