Amsterdam: Defying previous researches that link caffeine and miscarriages, a Dutch research finds no connection between caffeine utilization in pregnancy and certain behavioral disorder in the child.
The study is conducted by Eva Loomans and colleagues of Tilburg University in the Netherlands and published in the journal Pediatrics.
But previous studies have shown very strong links between caffeine consumption and miscarriage. And even one author has denied this research and still categorizes caffeine as a risky element for pregnant ladies.
Dr. De-Kun Li, a senior research scientist at Kaiser Foundation Research Institute asks women to stop or lessen the intake of caffeine while pregnancy.
On the other hand, Dr. Laura Elizabeth Riley, director of obstetrics and gynecology infectious disease at Massachusetts General Hospital, is of opinion that caffeine can be tricky for animal fetus but as far as humans are concerned, there is no such harm.
She further adds that caffeine is a potent stimulant but there are many other factors that can be responsible for behavioral problems.
Li, the Kaiser Foundation researcher says that it is not wise to draw any conclusion based on this study as the methodology used for this study is a bit different.
The ideal setting for such kind of study is to ask pregnant women to consume caffeine and then watch for results. But in this particular study, the Dutch researchers asked women, in their 16th week of pregnancy, about their caffeine intake and then followed them.
More than 8000 mothers were asked this question and then after six years, the researchers were able to collect data from 3439 kids.
After adjusting all the other factors like education levels, level of anxiety before pregnancy and few others, researchers found no such link between caffeine and behavioral problems.
Whether caffeine is harmful for pregnant women or not, this question remains as it is and this research does not seems strong enough to give a decisive answer.
