Fifty years back, on this day, television viewers in France and England got to see something completely different on their television sets.
French and English people watched the press conference of President Kennedy and Americans enjoyed French singer Yves Montand. And Telstar satellite was the reason behind this first ever satellite television broadcast.
In July 1962, NASA launched world’s first active communication satellite from Cape Canaveral, Florida. And the transmission was not only limited to television content but telephone, telegraph, data, telephoto and fax signals could also be transferred through it. However, this satellite was not able to live long and survived till February 1963.
It may sound not a big deal in a world where we have got YouTube that allows us to watch anything from any part of the world but back then Telstar satellite changed the whole structure of communication. There was a whole lot of generation that has lived this first telecast with awe and admiration.
And now the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum would conduct a “Telstar 50th Anniversary” symposium, on July 12 in collaboration with Embassy of France to commemorate this great event which revolutionized the global communication and laid path for many other great inventions.
