Karachi: It is unfortunate but a harsh reality that indecent content on internet is much popular among internet users of different ages, as it was seen recent that internet users in Pakistan have declined by 15 to 20 percent following the government move to block porn websites.
The internet traffic and connections both were seen at gradual decline after a large number of websites containing indecent material were blocked by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), industry officials said.
Thousands of pornographic websites frequented by Pakistanis were blocked by internet service providers (ISP), following directives issued by the PTA. However it planned to block more than 150,000 websites at services providers-end.
An official at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed to The News Tribe there was15 to 20 percent decline in internet users following the ban on obscene sites.
The traffic was seen at steep decline of around 30 percent six months ago when the websites were blocked on urgent move but it was gradually recovered with the passage of time as users shifted to different website for infotainment purpose. Thousands of users were witnessed searching for the nude photos of Pakistani models, drama, film actresses.
They also searched for scandals and personal information of female news anchors of country’s leading news channels.
The authority on the directives of Lahore High Court (LHC) took action to block the access of porn website last year and asked all internet services providers and mobile operators to act immediately in this regard.
About two years ago, US television network Fox News had said in a report that Pakistan stood among the countries where porn websites are the most searched ones on google. The report by Kelli Morgan said Pakistanis led the world in the number of per person searches of terms such as ‘dog sex’, ‘horse sex’, ‘camel sex’ and ‘rape pictures’
Internet users have been on the rise at an accelerated pace, crossing the 20 million benchmark as a greater percentage accessing the internet via mobile phones until October last year, according to a report.
The report had cited International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and said that estimated users have been surging significantly on a monthly basis.
