Berlin: Berlin police have arrested Luka Rocco Magnotta in a case in which dismembered body parts were mailed to Ottawa at the headquarters of the governing Conservative party and other addresses, Captain Guido Busch of the Berlin police confirmed.
“Police were called by a person from the internet café. Colleagues went the café and arrested a person we are sure is Mr. Magnotta,” said Captain Busch.
“He is in jail, and will go to a judge tomorrow. Our goal is to bring him to Canada as quickly as possible.”
Magnotta is facing five charges including first-degree murder in the slaying and dismemberment of Jun Lin, 33, a Chinese national who was studying at Montreal’s Concordia university. An international search for Magnotta was launched last week after the incident.
Lin’s torso was found in a suitcase in a Montreal alley last Tuesday, and other body parts, including a hand and foot, were mailed to the offices of political parties in Ottawa.
Earlier, Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere told reporters, “Some police officers have never witnessed a crime such as this,” according to AP.
Magnotta was complaining that his life had been destroyed by rumours like he was dating sex-killer Karla Homolka, a newspaper articles says. However, it suggests that Magnotta may have helped spread those rumours himself.
“The suspect and victim knew each other,” Lafreniere said, adding “It isn’t linked to organized crime.”
He said the dismembered parts belonged to the same body, however, DNA confirmation would confirm the matter.
He said that there are still body parts missing from the crime scene. “Are there other body parts being sent by mail, this is one of the hypotheses we’re researching. There are many details we are keeping for ourselves.”
Magnotta is facing other charges in Canada, including corrupting morals; harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper; causing an indignity to a body; and using the mail system to deliver “obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous” material.
