Buffalo: A New York doctor James Corasanti has been acquitted on Wednesday of manslaughter after he hit a skateboarder with his car and did not stop.
He was not found guilty of any major charges. However, the Erie County Court jury convict him of misdemeanour driving while intoxicated (DWI), The Associated Press reported.
Corasanti was drunk, SMSing and speeding when he hit and killed Alexandria Rice, 18, after a country club outing last July, prosecutors argued in the trial which started about a month ago.
His defence lawyers argued that he did not know about the accident until he reached home.
Corasanti was indicted last fall on charges of vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and tampering with physical evidence.
The charges on him carried a potential prison term of up to 23 years.
Corasanti’s blood alcohol content was over the legal limit for driving five hours after the accident, prosecutors said, while his attorneys defended him, saying the girl was wearing non-reflective clothing and was moving along in a crouched position.
But Corasanti said he simply never saw the victim and would have stopped if he’d known what happened.
