New York: Facebook is going to launch its own smartphone next year and started hiring several engineers for the purpose, New York Times reported.
Facebookâs mobile audience has been growing and the site has been trying for a while now to make out money from them. Facebook has recently launched its own app store.
Facebook has employed experts who have experience in working with iPhone and other smartphones, NYT reported, citing unnamed sources.
It quoted a Facebook employee as saying the site’s founder Mark Zuckerberg was “worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future… Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms”.
There have been reports for some time the site is working to build its own smartphone. BBC said that in 2010 Techcrunch reported that âFacebook was âsecretlyâ building a smartphone – although this particular project is said to have broken down.â
