Damascus: Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad al-Makdissi said on Sunday the government denied is not responsible for the brutal massacre in Houla in which at least 92 people, including 32 children, were killed.
The attack in the Governorate of Homs has raised high tensions in Syria and many in the international community pointed fingers at Assad’s forces.
“We completely deny responsibility for this terrorist massacre against our people,” Makdissi told a news conference.
He said that a probe is under way to find out the ‘terrorists’ behind the incident.
“We have set up a military and legal committee to investigate,” he said. “The results will emerge within days.”
Public anxiety was fuelled by numerous amateur videos from Houla posted to YouTube showing dozens of bodies, including many women and children.
“Whoever started, whoever responded and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence should be held responsible,” observer mission chief Major General Robert Mood said while talking to reporters in Damascus.
