Athens: Greece capital Athens has almost 13,000 people homeless and the number is till increasing, A new report says.
Praksis, a charity organisation, said in its report published Thursday that in Athens 1,500 Greeks are living in abandoned buildings, while 1500 others live on the streets. The city’s total population is over four million.
“Most of these 1,500 are unemployed or drug addicts left behind after the shutdown of rehabilitation centres for lack of funds,” Praksis Chairman Tzanetos Antypas was quoted by AFP as saying.
The number of homeless people is increasing in Greece due to the growing joblessness and bad economic condition of the country, the report said.
The homeless people are mostly the jobless people with middle or higher educational backgrounds who ended up living on the streets, Press TV reported.
“We see people aged 40-55, mainly men who have lost their jobs or are unable to pay their rent or support their families,” Antypas said.
One fifth of the country’s total workforce, around a million people, faces unemployment in Greece.
