Tampa, Florida: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that US cyber experts hacked al Qaeda websites in Yemen, replacing anti-US ads with ones showing al Qaeda victims in Yemen.
She said the attempt was launched by the State Department experts who patrol the web and social media to curb the organisation’s activities and to bar it from recruiting new members.
It was a rare public admission of the ongoing covert cyber war against extremists, AP reported.
“Within 48 hours, our team plastered the same sites with altered versions of the ads that showed the toll al Qaeda attacks have taken on the Yemeni people,” Fox News quoted her as saying.
In response, “Extremists are publicly venting their frustration and asking supporters not to believe everything they read on the Internet,” she said.
Speaking with Adm. Bill McRaven, special operations chief, Clinton said the cyber attack was part of the war US had waged against al Qaeda on all grounds like the one that killed Osama bin Laden in the Abbottabad city of Pakistan last year to this hacking raid.
