Chicago: Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Nato Secretary General, urged Pakistan on Saturday to support peace process in Afghanistan a day before Nato summit is going to be held in Chicago.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is invited in the summit and there are expectations that Pakistan is going to resume Nato supply which was blocked after the unfortunate Salala episode in which US air strikes killed 26 Pakistani soldiers last year.
“We can’t solve the problems in Afghanistan without the positive engagement of Pakistan,” AFP quoted Rasmussen as saying. He was speaking at a policy forum in Chicago, which is hosting the summit on May 21-22.
“We have to solve these problems,” he said, referring to concerns that insurgents take advantage of the porous Afghan-Pakistani border region to take sanctuary inside Pakistan.
Rasmussen said he would “convey a couple of clear messages” to Zardari when they meet in Chicago.
