Washington: A US Congressional Committee passed a bill on Thursday, imposing restrictions on Pakistan regarding American economic and military aid which will depend on Pakistan’s decision to resume Nato supply and actions again terrorists.
US House Armed Services Committee approved Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) 2013, which determines the defence budget for the fiscal year 2013.
The bill was introduced by US House Armed Services Committee chairman Rep. Buck McKeon. He urged banning US support to Pakistan until Leon Panetta, US Secretary of Defence, reports on “the model for reimbursement, including how claims are proposed and adjudicated; new conditions or caveats that the Government of Pakistan places on the use of its supply routes; and the new cost associated with transit through supply routes in Pakistan.”
“The bill places appropriate conditions on aid to Pakistan. It is imperative that Pakistan support our counterterrorism efforts and work to prevent the interdiction of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to Afghanistan,” House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member, Adam Smith, said yesterday.
The bill conditions the US procurement of goods and services from Pakistan with reopening of Nato supply routes to Afghanistan, which have been closed since the infamous Salala incident on November 26 last year in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a Nato cross border fire.
