Karachi: In a recent meeting of Board of Advanced Studies and Research, University of Karachi, five researchers of Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), KU, has been awarded the PhD degree.
These include, Dr. Saboohi Raza who used special technique of Genetic Engineering in her studies which is called somaclonal variation. This technique is used to identify good form of sugarcane. By this research the information about the mechanism of this technique would be identified which will be useful for future research and assist in those programs launched for the enhanced production of sugarcane as well.
Dr. Sitwat Zehra worked on Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms (PMS) which is a disorder in menstruating females. These symptoms appear just before the onset of menstruation in female body. She also studied about the variations of hormones in these females.
Dr. Saima Saleem focused up on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) which is commonly known as oral cancer. In her research she has found that due to the use of Pan, Chalia, Gutka, Niswar and Main puri, etc., there is an alteration in gene which named as TP53 responsible for tumour suppression and makes these people vulnerable to oral cancer.
Dr. Aaliya Riaz completed her research on an enzyme which was extracted from a unique bacteria and it was named as Bacillus subtitled KIBGE HAR. This enzyme is widely used by different industries, like industries of medicine, food, garment, paper and ethanol productive industry, etc.
Dr. Qamar un Nisa’s research was on a single gene named as AVP1, that has a salt and drought tolerance ability. This gene was introduced in Brassica Napus (Conola) in order to develop a salt and dough tolerance property in the same species.
