Tokyo: As many as 14,000 Japanese die in bathtub every year which is three times the deaths happened in car accidents, a report revealed. Japan’s health ministry is to launch an investigation after the report.
According to the figures, 4,612 people died as a result of traffic accidents across the nation in 2011, The Telegraph reported.
Most among the victims are the elderly, the report said. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is about to conduct a nation-wide study in this regard.
One factor behind the dilemma may be the fact that the role of bath in Japanese families is less about washing and more about relaxing at the end of the working day.
Local authorities’ data revealed most of the deaths were due to drowning, heart palpitations, heart attacks and subarachnoid haemorrhages, the newspaper said, quoting the Mainichi newspaper report.
