Khartoum: Sudan President Omar al-Bashir said on Thursday South Sudan would never be allowed to win the oil-rich Heglig region, which it had claimed to be under its control last week, sparking fears of war between the two countries.
He vowed to “never give up an inch of our land”, adding whoever extended his hand toward Sudan, they would cut it off.
The international community has urged both the nations to settle the issue through dialogue. South Sudan seceded from its neighbour in July this year under the terms of a 2005 peace agreement that ended decades of a civil war.
“We will punish them … and it will be the last lesson for them,” he said defiantly. “If they do not understand, we will make them get it by force. We extended our hand before for peace and unity. But they deceived us. Heglig is the start.”
No immediate response from the South has been made yet, however, a military official vowed to retain a grip on Heglig a day earlier.
“We will hold this position,” said Major General Mangar Buong, a deputy commander for the South Sudanese military.
