Karachi: The importance of micro-nutrients and multi-vitamins were the main topic of discussion as part of the World Health Day celebrations, globally celebrated on April 7 by the World Health Organization (WHO), at a symposium hosted by Pfizer Pakistan.
This year’s topic for the World Health Day is ‘Ageing and Health’ with the theme of ‘Good health adds life to years’. The focus is how good health can help us lead full and productive lives throughout various stages of life. This is an ideal occasion to highlight the needs of various micronutrients that are important for ageing healthily as well as to raise awareness amongst the general public on this key health issue.
According to the speakers, mother and child are often at particular risk of micro nutrient deficiencies. Dr. Inkisar Ali, a leading pediatrician, said in his address, “Lack of proper diet and food leads to micronutrient deficiencies including vitamins which further create complications for growing up children and therefore, the importance of micro-nutrients intake cannot be further highlighted.”
Dr Farrukh Naheed, Associate Professor, Gynecology dept., Baqai Medical University, speaking on the value of various vitamins and minerals during pregnancy said, “Iron deficiency is one of the leading causes of complications during pregnancy, which can be mitigated by the use of supplements.” This day also marked the launch of Pfizer Pakistan’s HealthEssentials portfolio, which includes a bouquet of leading and globally trusted multivitamin supplements of Pfizer Pakistan. Amongst these are brands which have been present in the local market for decades and have garnered reliability and trust from healthcare professionals and patients alike. “All these brands are innovatively researched to meet the specific needs of vital nutrients that we may lack at different stages of life”, stated Mr Abdul Majeed, Country Manager, for Pfizer Pakistan.
The event was attended by leading healthcare professionals in different specialized fields like pediatrics, gynecology and nutrition. Vice President of the Pakistan Nutrition and Dietetic Society, Ms Fayza Khan, touched upon the role of good nutrition throughout the life cycle, “Every one of us should realize the importance of meeting our daily nutrient and vitamin needs, as they play a significant role in our healthy development and ageing.”
Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of concern for WHO. Focusing on new and emerging health issues, World Health Day provides an opportunity to start collective action to protect people’s health and well-being. The topic of World Health Day in 2012 is ‘Ageing and health’ with the theme “Good health adds life to years”. Ageing concerns each and every one of us – whether young or old, male or female, rich or poor – no matter where we live.
