Tegucigalpa: At least 13 prisoners were killed and several others injured when fire erupted amid clashes among the inmates in Honduras, media reported on Thursday.
According to reports Security Minister Pompeyo Bonilla had confirmed reports of the fire at the facility, which was built for 800 inmates but which currently has 2,250.
“Thirteen person have died, an investigation is underway at the San Pedro Sula prison in the north of the country,” said police spokesman Walter Amaya.
Officials said the fire was rapidly brought under control.
A horrific fire erupted on February 14 at a prison in Comayagua, some 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of the capital Tegucigalpa which killed almost 350 people.
