Sydney: Happiness cannot be bought by money but a recent study has revealed that you can earn more money if you have a happy childhood.
Happy adolescents are more likely to earn more money when they reach adulthood, leading economists say.
A study of 90,000 people found that their happiness levels in early life had an effect on whether they would earn more money in the future.
The study was carried out by Professor Andrew Oswald, of Warwick University, and Dr Jan-Emmanuel De Neve of University College and is the first in-depth investigation into the part happiness plays in future earnings.
According to the Observer, the pair wrote in their study: ‘These findings have important implications for academics, policy-makers and the general public.
‘For academics, these results reveal the strong possibility for reverse causality between income and happiness – a relationship that most have assumed unidirectional and causal.’
They added: ‘The emotional well-being of children and adolescents is key to their future success, and this research provides yet another reason for the need to create an emotionally healthy home environment.’
It is thought that people with sunny dispositions were more likely to get a degree, be hired and get promoted, which could explain a causal link between a happy childhood and higher earnings, the study said.
The academics’ findings are due to be presented at the Royal Economic Society’s annual conference at the University of Cambridge.
