Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday appointed Lt. Gen Zahirul Islam as new Director General of country’s powerful secret service the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had agreed on appointing Islam out of three names sent by Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Perrvez Kayani.
Islam would take charge of the spy agency on March 19 after Gen Pasha, the incumbent chief retires on 18.
Gen Islam has served in the internal wing of the ISI.
The outgoing ISI chief Let Gen Pasha had told the his boss Gen Kayani in December last year that he would no longer be holding the charge of ISI and would not accept extension.
On the other hand the PPP-led government has been facing criticism for the extension given to Pasha twice in the past.
