Vanuatu: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck 38 miles northeast of Isangel, Vanuatu in the Pacific on Friday, US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
According to USGS, the quake struck at a depth of 36km at 0709 GMT (3.09pm Singapore time), 60km north-east of Isangel in Vanuatu and 324km north-east of Tadine in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia.
There was no threat of a widespread tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
‘However earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometres of the earthquake epicentre,’ it said.
