Kabul: At least 37 people have been killed by an avalanche in Afghanistan’s north-eastern Badakhshan province.
Provincial spokesman Abdul Rauf Rasekh said that the avalanche slammed into the village in Shekay district of mountainous Badakhshan province late Monday after days of heavy snowfall followed by a rise in temperature.
Afghanistan’s harshest winter in 15 years has already claimed scores of lives, with the latest avalanche taking the total death toll to at least 80 in Badakhshan alone, he said.
The provincial governor’s office said another six people were injured when the snow hit a village in Shekay district, near the Tajikistan border.
