Gioachino Rossini was born on the 29th February 1792 and died on the 13th November 1868 at the age of 77. Although he was only able to celebrate 19 birthdays on the day he was born. He wrote 39 operas as well as sacred music, chamber music, songs, and some instrumental and piano pieces. A tendency for inspired, song-like melodies is evident throughout his scores, which led to the nickname “The Italian Mozart.” Until his retirement in 1829, Rossini had been the most popular opera composer in history.
