Cairo: Security and airport officials has denied the arrested of the senior al-Qaida leader known as Saif al-Adel, saying that Mohammed Ibrahim Makkawi was arrested on his arrival Wednesday from Pakistan and was taken for questioning.
According to AP, Makkawi while talking to media at the airport said he was not the senior al-Qaida leader known as Saif al-Adel and that he had nothing to do with the terror group since 1989.
The U.S. has listed the name Mohammed Ibrahim Makkawi as the real name of Saif al-Adel, a pseudonym that means “sword of justice.” But former militants who know both men have previously said they are two different people and the U.S. identification is incorrect.
Adel whose real name is Muhammad Ibrahim Makkawi along with bin Laden’s son Hamza bin Laen was allegedly held under house arrest by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) after US led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. Iran never acknowledged their presence.
