Sydney: Sri Lankan cricket team have won their first match against Australia by eight wickets in the Commonwealth Bank Series at the Sydney Cricket Ground here on Friday.
In a do or die match for the Sri Lanka, bowlers restricted Australian strong batting line-up to just 158. Chasing a rain-revised target of just 152 in the 41, Sri Lanka chased the target very convincingly with 16.5 overs to spare.
The victory lifts Sri Lanka to seven points on the triangular series ladder, just two behind Australia and three behind India with all teams having completed four matches.
Skipper Mahela Jayawardene remained the top scorer for the Sri Lanka who scored 61 not out. While opener Tillakaratne Dilshan and veteran Kumar Sangakkara also chipped in with 45 and 30, respectively.
Thishara Perera was named Man of the Match for this economical bowling and his outstanding fielding. He picked up two wickets and made two run outs.
