Karachi: “Pakistan has great indigenous knowledge; the country needs to save its indigenous knowledge, while Patent Protection for Research & Development can play vital role in this regard.”
This was stated by Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director International Centre for Chemical & Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, while speaking at an inaugural ceremony of the one day workshop on “Patent Protection for R&D” held at Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Science Information Centre on Wednesday.
The workshop was jointly organised by HEJ- ICCBS and Pakistan Scientific & Technological Information Centre (PASTIC), an affiliate of Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science & Technology.
Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation, Islamabad was the chief guest on the occasion.
Representatives from the Industries, technologists, scientists and researchers were included among the audience. Dr Iqbal Choudhary said that the Indigenous knowledge (IK) is the local knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society.
Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro appreciated the organizers for the organization of a useful programme for technologists, scientists and researchers.
Director PASTICMs Nageen Ainuddin said that the main objective of the workshop was to create awareness among scientific researchers and industrial community about the importance of Intellectual Property, especially Patent as a tool for economic growth and wealth creation. She hoped that the workshop would generate a better understanding of the enormous potential of IP system & its role and patent protection for research in creating a better future for us all. In other sessions, the speakers from PASTIC, IPO, HEJ, PCSIR, and Industries have delivered their useful lectures on the issue to create awareness regarding the importance of intellectual property.
