Srinagar: The Indian administered Kashmir observed complete shutdown on Thursday (January 26 – Republic Day of India). The authorities jammed mobile phones till afternoon to ensure smooth passage of January 26 functions in Kashmir.
All shops and business establishments in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir remained closed while vehicular movement was off the roads. All the roads and byroads were presenting a deserted look with people preferring to stay indoors. Only the police, paramilitary and army vehicles and occasional private vehicles were moving on the deserted roads.
The government institutions and banks remained closed on account of holiday.
Meanwhile, the security apparatus across Kashmir was further tightened this morning to ensure smooth conduct of January 26 functions. All the roads leading to Bakshi Stadium, where the main function in Kashmir was held, were sealed and only people having special security passes were allowed entry into the stadium. The police and paramilitary personnel had erected barricades on the roads to disallow movement of people.
The sharp shooters and commandos were deployed on all high rise building around Bakshi Stadium, where the main function of January 26 was held.
