Jammu: A militant was killed in a gunbattle with Indian army men near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district in Indian administered Kashmir.
An army official said acting on a tip off, army men and Special Operation Group personnel of police launched a cordon and search operation in Chak Banola (Chatral) forest belt in Mendhar tehsil of mountainous Poonch district early this morning.
He said while the combing operation was going on, militants fired from automatic weapons towards the search party. “The fire was returned by the troopers and in the ensuing gunfight, a militant was killed,” he said.
Sources said two other militants managed to escape during the course of gunfight. “They are hiding in the forest area. Additional reinforcement were been rushed to the area and troops have launched a massive manhunt to track them down,” they said.
They said no contact has been established with the hiding militants.
“The identity of the slain militant and the outfit to which he owes allegiance was being ascertained,” the army official said.
