Karachi: As many as 600 students were conferred graduates degrees besides 113 gold medals in various disciplines and 17 Ph.D. and one M.Phil degree were also awarded at the 3rd Annual Convocation of the University held at the Expo-Centre in Karachi today.
Mussarrat Al-ain (MSc. In Zoology 2011), Aatira Muhammad Ali (Mathematics) and Humaira Mehmood (Botany) secured the top most positions in the university and was awarded with the Begum Anees Dehlvi Gold Medal Award.
The chief guest of the convocation was Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro, the chairman of the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF).
The Convocation was chaired by Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser. Mr. Abid Zia Mufti was the guest of honor who attended the program on behalf of S.M. Saboor, chairman GEOFMAN group. The convocation was also attended by a large number of faculty members and graduating students and their parents.
The chief guest congratulated all the graduating students, faculty and administration of the University for their Successful organization of the convocation. He announced that PSF is ready to fund the scientific research projects from the Federal Urdu University.
Abid Zia Mufti announced that the GEOFMAN group is ready to provide financial assistance in the establishment of an Institute of Pharmacy in the university.
Dr. Muhammad Tayyab Khan (Islamyat), Dr. Khadam Hussain (Islamyat), Dr. Ismail Moosa (Political Science), Dr. Syed Shoaib Akhtar (Political Science), Dr. Muhammad Abdul Malik (Social Work), Dr. Muhammad Bilal (Islamyat), Dr. Razi Rahi ( Urdu ) and Dr. Zahid Shah (Islamiat) were awarded Ph.D. degrees were awarded in the faculty of Arts of the University.
Dr. Syed Nawaz Al-huda (Geography), Dr. Waseem Ahmed ( Bio Chemistry), Dr. Waqar ul Haq (Botany), Dr. Aalia Abbass (Botany), Dr. Tanveer Fatima (Zoology), Dr. Kosar Yaasmin (Chemistry), Dr. Syed Iqbal Aalam (Micro Biology), Dr. Imrana Shabbir (Zoology) and Dr. Muhammad Fahim (Botany) were awarded Ph.D. degrees in the Faculty of Science.
Kashif Bin Zaheer was the only M.Phil degree winner from the university this year.
Address the convocation gathering Prof. Dr. Muhammd Qaiser congratulated graduating students, their parents and the teachers for a successful academic experience.
He extenuated the importance of higher education in the progress of country. He said the consistent progress of the higher education in Pakistan has been appreciated by the neighboring countries including India. He said Federal Urdu University has achieved a distinction in the academic institutions in Pakistan. He said more than 13000 students are enrolled in more than 40 departments and programs of the university and that make the university one of the largest universities in Pakistan. There are more than 400 teachers, including more than 100 PhDs and more than 51 M.Phil faculty members in the university.
The publication department of the university has translated more than 43 books during the year. Meanwhile more than 50 books are in the process of publication. The university has also initiated the Quality Enhancement Cell in the university. The cell has been established to ensure international quality standard in the university. He said first time in the university free medical facility has been extended to all university employees.
He said Botany, Geography, Economics and Mass Communication are the proud departments of the university wherein modern labs and media gallery is their proud features. He appreciated many mini research projects being worked by the faculty in the university and that is a positive sign for a good research environment prevailing in the university.
Prof. Dr. Qamar ul Haq, the registrar of the Federal Urdu University also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Waqar ul Haq and Azadi Fateh conducted the proceedings of the convocation.
