Karachi: “The trade volume between Pakistan and Algeria remains low despite the fact that both our countries enjoy excellent political relations.” This was stated by Dr. Ahmed Benflis, Algeria’s Ambassador to Pakistan, who visited the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Head Office at Karachi on Tuesday, December 20 and met Senator Haji Ghulam Ali, President-FPCCI, to discuss matters relating to bilateral trade and investment between the two countries.
The meeting was also attended by Dawood Usman Jakhura, Khalid Tawab, Chaudhry Aamer Ata Bajwa, Vice Presidents-FPCCI and Syed Masood Alam Rizvi, Secretary General-FPCCI.
The President-FPCCI welcomed Dr. Benflis at Federation House, and thanked him for visiting FPCCI, which is the apex trade body representing the business community of Pakistan. He stressed that the exchange of trade delegations between both countries was essential to further develop commercial ties, which were currently far below the latent potential that exists.
Tawab recalled that Algeria used to export steel to Pakistan in the past, but this has been discontinued now. Jakhura pointed out that there was a large market for Pakistani textile items in the UAE, and that Algeria, enjoying preferential access to the Gulf States, could assist Pakistan in selling its textile goods to these markets.
The absence of a direct air link between Pakistan and Algeria was noted. However, Dr. Benflis stated that Algeria was well connected to prominent European and Middle Eastern capitals by air, and this could be used until our air traffic was significant enough to make a direct air link feasible. Dr. Benflis also mentioned that FPCCI had signed two MoUs with the Algerian Chamber in the last 10 years, and stressed the need for implementation of the decisions contained in these agreements by both sides in order to further collaboration. He also invited Pakistani businessmen to visit Algeria with a strong delegation to explore further opportunities for trade and investment. The meeting was concluded with the presentation of the FPCCI Crest to Dr. Benflis.
