Karachi: The federal government should take stringent measures to save national flag carrier from total devastation or the employees will have no other option but to approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan, this was stated by leaders of the Joint Action Committee of PIA Employees, (JACPIAE) at a press conference here on Monday.
About 15 to 20 employees at the helm of PIA’s top management are responsible for the total devastation of PIA which has been marred with mismanagement, ill-planning, corruption and nepotism as PIA losses have mounted to Rs. 116 billion and half of the fleet is grounded.
JACPIAE is an association of PIA Employees with representation from Pakistan Airline Pilots Association (PALPA), Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SAEP), Aircraft Technologists Association of Pakistan (ATAP), Flight Engineers National Association (FENA), Alliance of Friends (SSA), Peoples Unity, PIACE Union and Air League.
JACPIAE Convenor and Pakistan Airline Pilots Association (PALPA) President, Captain Suhail Baluch and Deputy Convenor and President SAEP Shaukat Jamshed, demanded that the government should take immediate corrective measures by appointing competent administration or the employees will approach the supreme judiciary to take notice of the prevailing corruption, incompetence and poor administration afflicting the national airline as these vested elements have been pushing PIA to destruction under the nose of higher authorities.
He said that the PIA cannot bear further mismanagement at the hands of a few people in the management who are involved in corruption and conspiracies against the airline’s and its workers.
Even with an operation control office and outsourced ground handling agent at Jeddah 650 additional employees were deputed, on political grounds and the airline had to bear additional expenses despite their failure to manage Hajj operations.
On the other hand a fast dilapidating fleet will only add to the misery of the passengers as well, the national flag carrier will have at least 16 engines completing their life cycle in next 3 months while currently half of its fleet remains grounded due to shortage of 13 engines on 18 idle aircrafts.
It is pertinent to mention that PIA has taken 3 engines on lease paying more than 300 US Dollars per hour per engine, while its own engines are overhauled and ready for installation at Singapore and Amman but the management continues to ignore this fact to acquire more and more items on lease for kick backs.
