Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences in collaboration with Diabetes Association of Pakistan as a part of International Conference on Diabetes has organized a Public Awareness Seminar on Diabetes at its Ojha Campus, Karachi.
Leading Physicians and Diabetologists from Pakistan and abroad including Sir Micheal Hirst, President Elect, International Diabetes Federation, Dr. Suzena from UK, Prof. A. Samad Shera, Prof. Masood Hameed and Prof. M. Zaman Shaikh spoke on the occasion.
It was attended by a large number of student, diabetes patients along with their family members. The aim of the public awareness program is to raise awareness among the general public and the people who are at risk of having or getting diabetes.
In the Public Awarness Seminar, Dr. Samad A. Shera informed that in Karachi 80% of diabetic patients were administration insulin in wrong way which create more complications. If diabetes patients do not take insulin within 2 year, it will cause death. Pregnant females can also administer insulin pregnancy. Insulin inject should be administer 40 time at the one place.
Prof. Dr. Zaman Shaikh informed that healthy lifestyle habits would help citizens prevent diabetes and related chronic disease complications. He stressed the need for discouraging consumption of high carbohydrates and animal fat in meals and encouraging physical exercise and games. He emphasized that the population and health care providers in the developing countries to get their priorities right and need to shift their focus to Primary Prevention of Diabetes. There is need to be serious in preventing prevailing epidemic of diabetes and to mobilise our available resources to implement Primary Prevention Strategies for Type 2 Diabetes.
Prof. Masood Hameed Khan on the occasion said that Diabetes is a silent killer that causes irreparable loss to human body and affect kidneys, eyesight, nervous system and the digestive system. He further said that proper control of diabetes could prevent long-term complications. He further said that there is need to make efforts towards prevention and minimizing the consequences of the disease at all level.
Sir Micheal Hirst in his address said that by 2025, IDF estimates that 380 million people will have diabetes, with the greatest burden falling on low and middle-income countries. It is causing premature deaths in both children and adults, and devastating complications including amputations, kidney and heart disease. In Pakistan 9 m people have diabetes. He stressed on developing tools to disseminate relevant information on diabetes treatment, management and prevention.
