Srinagar: Authorities imposed tough restrictions at various places in Srinagar on Tuesday to prevent Shia mourners from taking out processions on 10th Muharram.
Large contingent of police and paramilitary force were deployed at all the entry points in Srinagar. The cops had placed concertina wires on all the roads, leading to Lal Chowk area to prevent the mourners from staging Muharram procession.
Lal Chowk was kept out of bounds for civilians as the cops had erected barricades and barbed concertina wires at almost all entry points of the city centre. The cops even did not allow pedestrian movement in Lal Chowk.
The cops also enforced tough restrictions in Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara, Nowhatta and some adjoining areas in old city.
For the first time, restrictions were also imposed on the movement of people living along the bank of river Jehlum.
Defying restrictions, Shia mourners under the banner of Anjuman-e-Sharian Shian tried to take out a Muharram procession from Tourist Reception Centre to Lal Chowk. However, they were intercepted by police and paramilitary personnel. The cops resorted to baton charge and lobbed tear smoke shells towards the mourners and arrested at least dozons of participants.
A top police official said no curfew was imposed in any part of the Valley. He, however, admitted that restrictions were imposed in some parts of old city and areas falling under police stations Maisuma and Kothi Bagh.
