Srinagar: Senior Kashmiri freedom movement leader Syed Ali Geelani said on Saturday that Kashmir is a police state.
“Jammu and Kashmir is occupied by Army and its affairs are being run by police,” Geelani said while addressing a press conference here today.
He alleged that affairs of the State are being run by the police and army. “This is clear from the represssion and brutality committed in Kashmir. There would be no other place in the world where oppression of this level is unleashed on the people for demanding their basic right of freedom,” he said.
The ailing separatist leader demanded release of all the detenues, who have completed their jail terms. “At least 29 persons are serving long sentences. The prominent ones include Dr Qasim Faktoo (undergoing life imprisonment), Ghulam Qadir Bhat and M.Shafi Khan (Shariyati). Faktoo has served more than 17 years in jail and despite recommendation of his release by the review board, the government is not releasing him. These people have been jailed just for political vengeance,” Geelani alleged.
He also demanded release of all the arrested youth and political prisoners.
