Washington: U.S. Central Command named a brigadier general in Air Force special operations to lead a probe into a weekend air strike by the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan that killed 24 Pakistani troops at the border.
The governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan will be invited to participate in the investigation, according to a statement. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which leads the coalition fighting in Afghanistan, will support, and cooperate with, the probe, the command said.
“Ensure openness and candor with them, respond to their questions they need to be addressed in the investigation and coordinate through them to receive evidence they offer,” US Marine General James Mattis told Brigadier General Stephen Clark in a letter appointing him as investigating officer.
“Their participation will facilitate the investigative process to determine what happened and how we preclude it from happening again,” Mattis wrote.
