Karachi: National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE) of Dow University of Health Sciences in collaboration with Daibetic Association of Pakistan (DAP) organized a press briefing on Wednesday (today) at Vice Chancellor Secretariat, Dow Medical College-DUHS.
The Press Briefing was presided by Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor-DUHS along with Prof. Dr. Samad Shera, President-DAP and Prof. Zaman Shaikh, Director-NIDE.
Prof. Masood Hameed Khan sharing his views said that proper control of diabetes could prevent or delay the long-term complications. He further said that there is need for concerted and coordinated efforts towards preventing of diabetes and minimizing the consequences of the disease at patient, community and government levels.
Briefing the media about Insulin, he informed that Insulin is a very sensitive and should be stored in 4 to 8 degree temperature. The place were insulin should be kept must have temperature control system.
Prof. Samad Shera, President, Diabetic Association of Pakistan said that diabetes was preventable through changes in the patient’s lifestyle. The patient should opt for doing regular physical exercises and normalizing the blood glucose and monitoring the disease, he said.
Prof. Zaman Shaikh, Director National Institute of Diabetes & Endocrinology informed that the prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus in Pakistan is very high, it is around 10% in adult population. The high figures of overall prevalence of abnormal glucose tolerance (Diabetes Mellitus and Impaired Glucose Tolerance) 20.5% in women and 15.9% in men are alarming
He further said that there are many misconceptions about insulin therapy in diabetes. He said that insulin is essential not only for health of diabetes, but it is needed to save life of so many diabetics especially for persons with type 1 diabetes.
In diabetic patients cardiovascular complications occur at an earlier age and often result in premature death. Overall cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rate in diabetics is 2-4 folds higher.
Death from heart diseases in women with diabetes is 23% more as compared to those without diabetes. People with diabetes are 2-4 times more likely to suffer stroke. Diabetes is also the leading cause of end stage renal failure accounting for about 43% of new cases every year.
Diabetes also causes blindness in diabetics between the ages of 20-74 years. The risk of leg amputation is 15-40 times greater in diabetics.
In Pakistan total annual cost of diabetic treatment is not known, but in USA during the year 2002 it was estimated to be 132 billion dollar that means one out of ten dollars is spent on diabetes.
