Islamabad: Pakistan and United States (US) has said that political issues must not be allowed to our affect trade ties, which should grow even stronger.’
This was stated by Mr. William Martin, the US Consul General in Karachi, while acting as the Chief Guest at the meeting of the FPCCI Standing Committee on Young Entrepreneurs recently at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry Head Office.
Khalid Tawab, VP-FPCCI thanked Mr. Martin for visiting FPCCI and urged the US government to allow better market access for Pakistani textiles to the American market. He also highlighted opportunities for American investment in transport, infrastructure and electricity generation.
The US Consul General visited FPCCI on the invitation of S.M. Farhad, Chairman of the FPCCI Standing Committee on Young Entrepreneurs. While thanking the Consul General for visiting FPCCI, Farhad listed some of Martin`s achievements over the years, and mentioned that he had served in various countries prior to his current posting in Pakistan.
This was followed by a brief introduction to the Young Entrepreneurs Committee, in which Farhad explained what the functions of the committee are; and its activities over the past one year. In response to Farhad`s introduction about the committee’s introduction and briefing Martin said ‘’It is an honor to be at the FPCCI and meet so many distinguished young professionals’’. He further added ‘’There is too much talent, too much economic potential here in Pakistan’’
In his response to the issues raised by the business community, Martin praised the entrepreneurial spirit of young Pakistani entrepreneurs, and said that in light of the fact that the US was celebrating a Global Entrepreneurship Week, he was happy to participate in today’s event at FPCCI.
He stressed on Pakistan to work on developing better regional ties, and said the recent steps taken to normalize trade between Pakistan and India were very encouraging. He acknowledged that market access was a sensitive issue within USA, but he would ask his government to consider Pakistan’s concerns in the greater interest of more trade. He also urged Pakistan to implement reforms in taxation and power distribution so that foreign investors are encourage to make use of Pakistan’s abundant natural and human resource.
The Consul General’s address was followed by an interactive question and answer session. Also present on the occasion were Mr. Dawood Usman Jakhura and Mr. Usman Sheikh, Vice Presidents, FPCCI, Mansha Churra, Sheikh Humayun Sayeed, Ahmar Imtiaz, Saeed Farouk, Danish Elahi, Ehtesham, Irfan Pardesi, Raffay, Danyal, Mustafa Abbasi and other prominent businessmen were also present in the meeting
