Washington: Google has updated Web search index and boosting the freshness factor for 35 percent.
The world’s most popular search engine announced that it will alter some of the algorithms it uses to determine what search results it shows to its users.
The changes try to make results more relevant and beef up features which Google believes set it apart from rivals.
Amit Singhal, a Google fellow posted in search blog that the changes will affect 35 per cent of searches carried out on Google.
“Given the incredibly fast pace at which information moves in today’s world, the most recent information can be from the last week, day or even minute, and depending on the search terms, the algorithm needs to be able to figure out if a result from a week ago about a TV show is recent, or if a result from a week ago about breaking news is too old,” Singhal said.
The new search mechanism puts more value on hot or trending topics, focuses on the most recent date on recurring events, like elections, and puts a premium on information that has received an update.
The update complements Google’s ‘Caffeine web indexing system’, which was completed last year and allows the website to crawl the web more quickly and on a wider scale.
