Kandahar: A US military base in southern Afghanistan city of Kandahar was attacked by Taliban insurgents armed with gun and explosives, Afghan police said.
According to a report, police said a group of “three to four” armed men reportedly wearing with suicide vests, had taken up positions in an empty compound that was once used by the USAID development agency and were firing on the base, police.
Local sources said that the area was reverberating with heavy gunfire and blasts and the fight was underway. They said that it was not clear how many militants have attacked the base, but the attackers were targeting the base from different directions.
Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman said that the attack was carried out by Taliban fighters. Spokesman Qari Yousuf said that attackers were wearing suicide vests.
