Islamabad: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Pakistan could bring the Taliban and Haqqani network to negotiating table. She said the US is trying to persuade Pakistan to intensify its efforts against Haqqani network as terrorists are operating independently in the country.
She was talking to members of civil society and traders in Islamabad on Friday. The secretary said that Pakistan and the US was facing challenges in their relations and there was trust deficit between both the countries. She said that both the countries could resolve all the issues through dialogue.“What perturb us are anti-American sentiments in Pakistan”
“We are holding talks with those groups who want to renounce violence for bringing stability in Afghanistan”, she said and added “we consider Pakistan a key to Afghan peace process. Clinton said that assassination of Burhanuddin Rabbani seriously hurt the Afghan peace process.
She said that Pakistan Army was facing military challenges as they rendered great sacrifices in the war against terrorism.
Replying a query regarding US drone attacks in Pakistan, she replied as saying, “these attacks are to protect Pakistan and Afghanistan from terrorists”.
Hillary Clinton said two million out of total Pakistani population pay taxes, it is very small, people should themselves contribute to generate resources .
She added that boosting small and medium business was key to strengthen economy.”US markets are open for Pakistani products”.
She added that Pakistan geographical position was very significant as trade between Iran and India was possible through its territory.
