Ankara: The Turkish army has launched a ground battle into northern Iraq as Ankara tightens the noose around the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorists.
Turkish military headquarters declared on Thursday that the country’s commandos have initiated ground operations with the support of gunship helicopters against PKK forces in five different areas in southeast Turkey and northern Iraq.
The army also said the cross-border incursion included 22 battalions, making it a major assault on the Kurdish terror elements.
On Wednesday, Turkish F-16 jet fighters carried out large numbers of overnight raids over PKK hideouts in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
The aerial operation followed a deadly attack by the Kurdish terror group late Tuesday, killing 26 security forces and injuring 22 others in the southeastern province of Hakkari.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party took-up arms against Ankara in 1984 in an attempt to establish a separate Kurdish region in south-eastern Turkey, leaving more than 45,000 people dead in its two-decade armed insurgency.
The PKK is considered a terrorist group by much of the international community and has bases in northern Iraq’s rocky Qandil Mountains, in areas controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
