Karachi: President Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) Mian Abrar Ahmad has rejected the proposal forĀ 5-days working week in the name of energy conservation.
In a statement, President KCCI said that that the country was passing through most difficult times of its history. When the economy was limping, the nation needed to work seven days a week, he said.
He strongly opposed the proposal likely to be submitted in an Energy Conference to be chaired by Prime Minister soon.
He said that the last time the government implemented 5-days week for public sector, customs and ports, the commercial and industrial activity was severely hampered. Besides, exports of consignments and timely clearance of goods were hurt, he said.Ā Ā He said that due to such practiceĀ PakistanĀ remained cut off for three and a half days from the rest of the world.
Abrar said thatĀ to uplift the economy the government must consider curtailing the gazetted holidays. Advancing the clock also failed to serve the purpose, he said.
He stated that such exercises proved futile in the past and every segment of life was disturbed by such measures.
The KCCI president stated that nowhere in the world banks close when the commerce and industrial sector is operative. Even in the countries where 5-days week is observed commercial banks remain open on Saturdays, he said.
Exporters maintaining trade ties with Gulf countries faced additional problems because Friday is the official weekly holiday there. The same is for the customs and ports, which cannot be closed down for two days as their closure will stop valuable exports of this country and delay clearance of imported goods.
