Washington: Former President and chief of All Pakistan Muslim League(APML) Pervez Musharraf has stressed that United States must address the concerns of Pakistan related to security and stability in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US combat forces in 2014.
The former President also demanded that United States must intervene to check the rapidly increasing anti-Pakistan influence of India in Afghanistan. Elaborating on the present situation he said, “In Afghanistan there is some kind of a proxy conflict going on between Pakistan and India. India is trying to create an anti-Pakistan Afghanistan.” The former President believes that this grand scheme is part of “India’s vision of dominating the region” and its “ambition is to create a weak Pakistan.”
Musharraf agreed with the US law-makers that Pakistan must clarify and de-mystify as to why it is not acting against the “Haqqani network in North Waziristan.
He said that no one including the Haqqani network should be allowed to use Pakistan as a launching pad to plan and conduct terrorists attacks and operations against coalition forces in Afghanistan. However, he maintains that US needs to consider the sacrifices that the Pakistani nation has made to arrest the growth of the terrorist networks in the war on terror.
Commenting on the current situation of Pakistan, the former President observed that the present government is dysfunctional and that the two major political parties PPP and PML-N have failed to deliver to the people of Pakistan.
He spoke of the necessity of creating another political alternative which is capable of addressing the problems of the State, enjoys the confidence of the people and has an international standing. Such an alternative can emerge if the next elections are free, fair and transparent. This could only be possible if the forthcoming elections are held under the supervision of the Pakistan Army – the single largest credible institution in Pakistan.
On the view of Pakistanis’ about the U.S., former President said U.S. has a “pro-India tilt” that is “seen extremely negatively by the people of Pakistan.” He added that the people feel they have been used and then betrayed, and the U.S. must now ‘do more’ and invest in confidence building measures to repair the damaged diplomatic relationship.
