Washington: US President Barack Obama has confirmed that al Qaeda leader Anwar Awlaki has been killed in Yemen.
Confirming the death of US-born al Qaeda leader, Obama said in a statement on Friday that Awlaki targeted several Americans. Awlaki was involved in planning attacks in the US, he stated.
Earlier on Friday, Yemen’s Defence officials said that Awlaki was killed in an attack.
According to reports Awlaki was killed along with other companion in al-Jawf province some 140 km from the capital Sanaa.
The statement did not elaborate circumstances in which Awlaki was killed.
Tribal sources said that the al Qaeda leader was targeted in an airstrike.
Al Jazeera said that the airplane that carried out the strike was likely to be American, according to tribal sources, who added that US aircraft had been patrolling the skies over Marib for the past several days.
