New York: World leaders condemned the assassination of former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, saying the attack will not deter them in working with Afghanistan on its path to security and prosperity.
US President Barack Obama met his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai here on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and offered his condolences to the people of Afghanistan.
Terming Rabbani’s death as a “tragic loss,” Obama said the former president cared deeply about Afghanistan, had been a valued advisor to Karzai and made enormous contribution to rebuilding the country.
“I think we both believe that despite this incident, we will not be deterred from creating a path whereby Afghans can live in freedom and safety and security and prosperity, and that it is going to be important to continue the efforts to bring all elements of Afghan society together to end what has been a senseless cycle of violence.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron said Rabbani had played a key role in the peace process.
“He was a respected former president of Afghanistan and played a vital role as the chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council,” Cameron said. “He will be sorely missed but the work of the Peace Council will go on. We remain determined to see Afghanistan prosper.”
Karzai termed Rabbani’s assassination was an “act of brutality and cowardice”, saying the leader sacrificed his life for Afghanistan’s peace. The mission Rabbani had undertaken was vital for the Afghan people and for the country’s security and peace, Karzai added.
“I don’t think that we can fill his place easily. He was one of the few people in Afghanistan with the distinction that we cannot easily find in societies. But this will not deter us from continuing on the path that we have and we will definitely succeed,” Karzai said.
