Left arm spinner Herath claimed three wickets in quick succession to reduce Australia to 115 for six in their second innings of the first test on Thursday. Australia had a lead of 283 runs with four wickets in hand at the end of the second day’s play.
Captain Clarke made 60 while Hughes managed 28. Khwaja was not out on 2 and Johnson on three.
Sri Lanka earlier were got all out by the Australians at 105 in their first innings thanks to some fine bowling by off spinner Lyon and pacer Watson.
Lyon, playing his first test, grabbed five wickets, while Watson captured three. Lyon was part of the staff of a cricket ground last year and had played only a few first class matches before this test.
Only four Sri Lankan players managed to get into double figures. And their top scorer was Paranvitana with 29.
