Karachi: Violence returned to the financial capital as the city celebrated the country’s 65th birth anniversary, when 11 people were killed and eight injured following different incidents of firing. Four bodies were also found from a house one of the city’s industrial areas.
In, what is being said the first case ever of its kind, a eunuch and a man who were married to each other just a few days ago, were shot dead in the name of honour killing. The assailants, who remained unidentified till the filing of this report, are suspected of being related to one of the victims or were members of their caste.
The eunuch, who was identified as Wajahat and the man as Kamran, were shot dead outside their house in Orangi Town area of Data Nagri.
“The couple were married and were living together in their house in Orangi for the last four days,” a police officer in Orangi Town said. “At the moment we do not have idea who the killers are, but we suspect them to be close to the victims because of the bizarre nature of the relationship and the killing.” The couple had fallen in love and were living with each other in the same house, neighbors of the slain couple told the police. It is still not known if the victims were targeted outside their house while they were waiting for somebody or were planning to go somewhere.
Four bodies, all members of the same family, were discovered from a house in New Karachi Industrial Area Sector 5-F. The victims had their throats slit and were found in a pool of blood in different parts of the house, indicating some of them were chased before being slaughtered. Police said they also suspect the involvement of more than one killer.
The victims were identified as Rajab Ali, Amna, Hina and Jamsheda. This was Jamshed’s second marriage, while Ali was her father-in-law.
An activist of the defunct Sipah-e-Sahaba and two of his friends were injured as they were targeted in one of the city’s volatile Sector 4-F of Orangi Town, which falls under the remit of the Pirabad police station. The victim was identified as Shahid while those injured included Wajahat and Rashid. Both injured are said to be in critical condition.
A worker of the Karachi Electric Supply Co. was shot dead by members of a religious outfit in New Karachi following an altercation over an illegal connection. The victim was identified as Qamar Alam, and residents claimed he was trying to install an illegal connection with a wire when members of the outfit picked up a fight with him that resulted in his being gunned down.
A former member of the Sunni Tehreek was gunned down in Garden by unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle when he was standing in his neighborhood where he lived. Asif was 30 years old and had only recently left the party.
A body each, which remained unidentified till after this report was filed, was recovered from the city’s Chakiwara and Baldia towns.
Four men were injured in Quaidabad, two on the MA Jinnah Road and two in the Lines Area were injured in different incidents of gunfire.
