Karachi: A hand-grenade attack in the Lyari area left six persons, including a local office bearer of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and a child, injured and caused panic in the locality late on Tuesday.
The PPP activists said that the general secretary of PPP of south zone, Zafar Baloch, was sitting in an office of PPP situated in Gul Muhammad Lane area of Lyari when unknown motorcyclists hurled a hand grenade at the office, injured Baloch, one of his inmate and a child 8.
The child was playing on the road in front of the office of the PPP. The child and other injured were shifted to Civil Hospital while Zafar Baloch was shifted to Agha Khan Hospital in critical condition.
One of the activists of the PPP, who shifted Baloch to the hospital, said that Baloch was in critical condition. “He is beloved leader and we are praying for him”, he said.
It may be pertinent to mention here that Zafar Baloch was announced the general secretary of the PPP of South Zone just three days ago. Baloch is the former spokesman of the Lyari Amman Committee.
Hundreds of activists of PPP Lyari Zone reached at Agha Khan Hospital and made a protest against the attack on Zafar Baloch. The activists chanted slogans against the ally party of the government.
“Muttahida Qaumi Movement is continuously making grenades attack in our areas resulted dozen of killings”, alleged the protesters while talking to media.
Investigators suspected that the “back-to-back” grenade attacks mainly in the south zone of the police organisational structure were actually an attempt to `convey a message and cause scare`.
“It was between 11.30pm to 12pm when two men on a motorbike emerged on the main road on which is located the Pakistan People’s Party office and sped away after one of the riders threw a hand-grenade from the moving bike,” said a police official.
Police have been called to the area to investigate the area.
Lyari and its surrounding areas were came under tension after the incident and intense firing were reported in the areas till the report filed. Two vehicles were also set ablaze in the area after the incident.
After the incident several dozen armed men attack the area of Bham Pora with grenades and automatic weapons. The attackers threw four grenades on different locations and opened indiscriminate firing. No casualties were reported, police said. Police was unable to enter in the area because of intense firing.
