Karachi: In the world’s most populated country China, kidney is the most expensive organ. But the same organ at the cheapest price is available in the world’s sixth most populated nation; Pakistan.
According to the information available with The News tribe, 25 million people of Pakistan have kidney related problems. An estimated 15,000 people die each year due to kidney failure. The estimated population of Pakistan is above 180 million.
Health experts have pointed out that a person can lead a normal life with one kidney in case his other kidney fails. People drawn by poverty therefore become ready to sell their one kidney.
According to a report, during the period ranging from March 2010 to March 2011, about 450 kidneys were smuggled outside Pakistan. People sold their kidneys for one to five thousand worth amount of money. While on the other hand the same kidney was sold to the recipients at an amount of 1 lakh to 2 lakh rupees.
Sale of human organs is unlawful in Pakistan according to the law and the constitution of Pakistan. But a rise has been witnessed in such sales in Pakistan
It has been discovered that kidneys are stolen from patients while they are undergoing stomach operations. The government has so far not taken any steps to curb this crime.
Moldova situated in Eastern Europe is on the top of the list where kidneys are sold while China ranks the second, Pakistan third and India fourth.
